Wieden + Kennedy has unveiled the fourth issue of ‘Motherland’ with the focus on the North-East. The issue explores a culturally diverse part of the country which for many, still exists on India’s periphery, both literally and figuratively.

In its latest issue, ‘Motherland’ also explores the subcultures of the North-East region and looks at how such a context has given rise to new issues, ideas and in many cases, the forging of new cultural frontiers. From young Naga entrepreneurs looking to shape their statess future, to an Imphal-based vigilante organisation, to the artists and writers recreating the unique folktales of the region – the issue looks at the grassroots, fresh and dogged ways in which people who comprise the North-East are putting their places on the map.

The issue features a portrait series about activist and icon Irom Sharmila, photographed by Gauri Gill, and a photo series by Bharat Sikka, which imagines an alternate India.

To capture this issue’s spirit of youth-led progress in the North-East, the magazine’s cover image is artist Riyas Komu’s painting of a young, Manipuri footballer Mandakini Devi, who played on the Indian women’s national team at the 2010 South Asian Games.

The issue on the North-East features articles on cuisine, culture, couture, tourism, music, social activism, sports, North-Eastern people staying outside the state, and more.
