In a significant overhaul of its weekend programming, MSNBC has decided to cancel Mehdi Hasan's Sunday night opinion show. The network announced the broader shakeup, indicating a strategic shift in its lineup.

Despite the cancellation, Mehdi Hasan will continue to contribute to MSNBC as an on-camera analyst and fill-in host.

To fill Hasan's Sunday night slot, MSNBC plans to extend Ayman Mohyeldin's show by adding a second hour. Mohyeldin's total broadcast time on MSNBC is set to expand to four hours on both Saturdays and Sundays.

Additionally, the network is introducing a new ensemble program titled "The Weekend," scheduled to air on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8-10 a.m. The show, hosted by MSNBC regulars Alicia Menendez, Symone Sanders-Townsend, and Michael Steele, is slated to premiere on January 13.

Mehdi Hasan, known as one of MSNBC's prominent liberal pundits, joined the network in 2021 to host the Sunday evening show.

In a message to the staff, MSNBC President Rashida Jones explained that these changes are aimed at "better positioning ourselves as we head into the presidential election." The shakeup reflects MSNBC's strategic adjustments in the dynamic media landscape.
