Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President for 50 years M Karunanidhi passed away at the age of 94 in Chennai. Kauvery Hospital released a statement saying that ‘Kalaignar’ took his last breath at 6:10 pm on August 7. As one witnessed scenes of inconsolable grief extend over Tamil Nadu, the state government declared a public holiday on Wednesday. Also, the national flag flies at half-mast on August 8 in Delhi. Tamil Nadu will observe a seven-day mourning as a mark of respect to the five-time Chief Minister.
While political leaders across parties expressed grief over the demise of the foremost Dravidian politician, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and few other leaders are in Chennai to pay their last respect to the man who has left a big void in the Tamil politics.
