Following a brief illness, Singh, who would have turned 89 this month, breathed his last at the National Heart Institute
Veteran journalist Surendra Nihal Singh passed away in New Delhi, on Monday following brief illness. Singh, who would have turned 89 this month, breathed his last at the National Heart Institute.
“He was ill for quite some time. But he turned critically ill for the past one week,” Indu Nihal Singh, his sister-in-law was quoted by the media. He is survived by four sisters. Singh, who had worked with several leading newspapers including The Indian Express, The Statesman, The Indian Post and Khaleej Times, was looked upon in high regards by his former colleagues as well as his readers.
He won the prestigious International Editor of the Year Award in New York for his role in opposing Indira Gandhi’s emergency in mid-1975 and became President of Press Club of India in 1994.
He was Resident editor, The Statesman, New Delhi, India from 1973 to 1975, Chief editor in Calcutta, 1975 to 1979.
From 1981 to 1982, he was Editor-in-chief of The Indian Express and Founding editor of The Indian Post, Bombay from 1987 to 1988.
Singh was Director Press Institute of India, New Delhi, 1992 to 1994, Editor of Khaleej Times, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, since 1994 and Syndicated columnist, New Delhi, 1980 to 1981, 1988 to 1992.
His books include The Yogi and the Bear: A Study of Indo-Soviet Relations; Ink in my veins: A Life in Journalism; and The Gang and 900 million: A China Diary.
Singh was born on April 30, 1929 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, to Gurmukh Nihal and Lachchmi (Devi) Singh. Gurmukh Nihal Singh was the Chief Minister and Governor of Rajasthan and Speaker of Delhi Assembly.
Many politicians, former colleagues and admirers took to social media to express their grief.
