The Indian Premier League recently concluded a three-day franchisee workshop in Thailand aimed at devising a collaborative strategy for the league in Season Two. The workshop was attended by over 130 personnel associated with the League, who reviewed, discussed and brainstormed on ideas and recommendations across a range of topics, including player regulations, commercial, logistics, hospitality, ticketing, licensing and merchandising amongst others.

Even as there are whispers in the corridors of ad agencies on cost cutting and hiring freezes, there were some panic waves amongst quite a few when an internal mail from Sir Martin Sorrell was quoted in a few international reports on WPP’s decision to freeze hiring in a few of its international markets. The WPP India officials, however, are not perturbed as yet. A few industry sources informed that at least in some of the WPP operating units, caution had already become a part of life.

The first big crisis for journalism came after 9/11 and the media industry failed that test. The essential crisis was: ‘what is the role of journalism in the face of a national crisis?’ The media industry globally failed that test. They became polarised very quickly and began to reflect largely their governments’ views. This was particularly true of the British and the American media. Though the media industry has recovered from this, I am not sure whether it would be able to act substantially differently in the face of the next national crisis, which is very sad.
