Sahara India Pariwar’s latest move of putting in a $2 billion bid to buy MGM Inc is part of its larger plans for film production and distribution, including setting up of a hi-tech Film City at Aamby Valley. Subrata Roy, Managing Worker & Chairman of Sahara India, in an exclusive conversation with exchange4media.
At a time when there is intense debate over the recent High Court judgment legalising gay relationships in India, Doordarshan is going ‘gay ga’ with a romantic comedy, called ‘Bajega Band Baaja’, which revolves around a gay man. The public broadcaster has begun airing this all new prime time serial on DD National from July 14, 2009.
New Delhi-based herbal cosmetics company, Ayur Group, is all set to launch a 24-hour, free-to-air, bilingual information and awareness channel, Ayur Living India. The channel would be launched through Ayur Group’s broadcast arm, Vintage Studio Private Limited. According to channel officials, the cost outlay of the channel is in the vicinity of Rs 25 crore, and it would become operational by the June-end or early July, 2009.
In a bid to emerge as a key player in the regional news domain, Sadhna News, part of Sadhna Media, is planning to launch three regional news channels this year. Company officials informed exchange4media that this includes UP-Uttrakhand, Punjab, Haryana & Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan. The expansion plans also include a national news channel by 2010.
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has empanelled four advertising companies - Crayons Advertising, Planet Advertising, Prabhatam Advertising and Concept Advertising - to carry out its proposed Rs 100 crore outdoor campaign for the year 2009-10. It is learnt that BSNL had received tenders for the business from 13 agencies.
News graphics agency KBK has come out with a special Poll Graphics package for the print and web media covering both the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections and Assembly elections. The KBK Poll Graphics package offers integrated and comprehensive coverage from pre-election to post-election period, with ready-to-print and uploadable graphics.
Chauthi Duniya, a Hindi weekly broadsheet, is being revived after a gap of 17 years. The Sunday paper that had closed down in 1992 after a six-year run is making a comeback in its new avatar on March 29. Chauthi Duniya is being launched by Ankush Publications, a subsidiary of infrastructure company Gannon Dunkerley.
Doordarshan is launching a new talent based realty show, ‘Fair & Lovely Choo Lo Asman’, produced by Endemol, from March 25. The 26-part primetime show will be aired on Wednesdays at 10 pm. The realty show, in which Doordarshan is a co-producer, will feature 24 young women vying with each other for top honours.
‘Chauthi Duniya’, a Hindi weekly broadsheet paper that ran successfully for six years till 1992, is being revived from January-end 2009. The Sunday broadsheet is being relaunched by Antriksh Publication, also runs a daily, ‘Afternoon’, from Mumbai. The group is also planning to launch a Delhi edition of ‘Afternoon’ in the coming year.
After a spate of religious channels, it is now the turn of a spiritual music channel, Divya, to hit the airwaves. This 24-hour free-to-air channel has been launched from Chandigarh by Divya Broadcasting Network Pvt Ltd. Divya claims to be the first and only spiritual music channel that has the look and feel of a mainline music channel.
A unique three-day festival of short films, Filmbooth 2008, is getting underway in Delhi on December 19. The festival is being organised by Forum for Films. Planned on the lines of LA Shortfests, The Manhattan Shorts, NY Shorts, the event aims at bringing together short films from across the country.
A special interest bilingual (English & Hindi) magazine on immigration – ‘Immigration Today’ – was launched on December 17, 2008. Priced at Rs 35, the 56-page magazine is being initially distributed in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir, besides Canada, England, Europe and Dubai. Brought out by First Immigration Publishers Pvt Ltd, this monthly magazine is published from Jalandhar.
Rajdeep Sardesai, Editor-in-Chief, IBN Network, has been unanimously been elected as President of Editors’ Guild of India. Sardesai is the first ever TV editor to be elected to this post. The Week’s Sachidananda Murthy has been re-elected General Secretary, while India TV’s Rohit Bansal is the treasurer.
Parvez Ahmed, the outgoing Vice-President of the Press Club of India, has been elected as the new President of the Club for the year 2008-09 in the elections held on October 19. Pushpendra Kulshrestha was re-elected as Secretary General. Jayanta Bhattacharya of Times Now and Narendra Bhalla of Hindi Outlook have been elected as Vice-Presidents.
Doordarshan has lined up a new devotional series, ‘Guru Manyo Granth’, to commemorate 300 years of Gurta Gaddi Divas of Siri Guru Granth Sahib. The seven-part daily series goes on air on DD National (DD1) from October 24 at 8.30 pm and will cover the entire history and philosophy of Siri Guru Granth Sahib.
Two new persons, Retd Major General Utpal Chattopadhayay and journalist Sunil Dang, have been inducted as part time members on the Prasar Bharati Board on October 16. They have come in place of Chitra Mudgil and ML Mehta. The other part time members on the Board are RN Bisaria, Sunil Kapoor, George Verghese and Mamata Shanker.
Organised laundry business in India is set for a major boost with Wardrobe launching its operations in Delhi with an aim of setting up a pan-India network of an ultra modern chain of dry cleaning and laundry stores. The company will be investing Rs 150 crore over the next five years on expanding the operations to 1,000 retail outlets in 30 cities.
National Housing Bank (NHB), wholly-owned by Reserve Bank of India, has invited applications from INS accredited advertising agencies for empanelment with it. The eligibility critera for ad agencies include full accreditation of INS, Advertising Council of India for press advertisement, and Prasar Bharti accreditation for electronic media ads.
The resignation of Deepak Chaurasia, who had put in his papers last week, as Executive Editor at Aaj Tak, has not been accepted by the TV Today management. exchange4media has learnt that a final decision on the resignation would be taken after Aroon Purie, who is currently out of India, returns on June 21.
With Punya Prasoon Bajpai, former Channel Head of Sahara Samay, joining as Consulting Editor, Zee News is all set for a relaunch, repositioning itself as a serious and sensible news channel. Bajpai has been specially inducted to add punch to the new direction that Zee News would be taking following its relaunch. He would be directly reporting to Group Editor, BV Rao.
In an era of niche TV channels, Focus TV, touted as India’s first women-focused news and current affairs channel, is gearing up for launch by June this year. Meanwhile, the channel’s promoter, Positiv TV Media, has also unveiled plans to launch a Bhojpuri infotainment channel and a metro channel from Hyderabad by June.
Sahara News has entered into an agreement with Naman Communication to outsource the marketing of its regional news channel in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Naman Communication is an SPV in which Prabhatam Advertising and Kamaljit Singh Ahluwalia, a businessman with interests in mining, have a 50:50 stake.
Ashish Kaul, Executive Vice President, Corporate Brand Development, Zee Group has quit the group after a decade-long stint. Confirming the development, Kaul said, “After a decade-long association with the Group I have decided to move on. I have already put in my papers and am currently serving a one-month notice period.”
Barely three weeks after ‘quitting’ as Executive Producer of Sahara Group’s national Hindi news channel Samay, along with channel head Punya Prasoon Bajpai and six other key editorial people, Sanjay Bragta is back with the channel. However, Bragta is now insisting that he had not resigned earlier, but was simply not coming to office.
Sakaal Group of Newspapers is strengthening its product portfolio with an English daily, Sakaal Times, which is slated for launch in April. To be launched from Pune, Dilip Padgaonkar is the Editorial Director for the newspaper, while A N Sen is its Editor-in-Chief. The price of the newspaper has not been decided on yet.

Riding high on its expansion plans, Domino's Pizza is set to launch a major marketing drive to support its ‘Fun Meal For 4’, the newly introduced value for money combos for the family. Domino's, which has an annual marketing communication budget of Rs 20 crore, has earmarked a marketing spend of Rs 4 crore for this new promotion campaign.
Colours Multimedia Pvt Ltd, a newly formed publishing house of a Chandigarh-based group with interests in the education sector, has launched ‘Political & Business Daily’, a newspaper from Delhi. Former Financial Express Chandigarh hand, Parveen Modi, has been roped in as Editor of the 18-page broadsheet, which will focus on north India.

Aaj Tak honchos have finally undertaken the much-expected restructuring following the exit of its senior staffers, including Ashutosh, Mrityunjay Jha and Prabal Pratap Singh. As part of this restructuring exercise, Associate Executive Producer, Amitabh, who was heading Tez Channel, has been made the new head for Delhi Aaj Tak, the upcoming channel on Delhi and NCR, which is scheduled for launch next month.
Delhi-based DLF Group, India’s largest real estate developer, has awarded the mandate for all communication needs of its forthcoming IPO to Concept Communications. The account size is pegged in the region of Rs 30 crore. DLF Universal Ltd is coming up with one of the largest in India IPOs in June-July worth Rs 10,000 crore to fund its pan India expansion plans. The group is also venturing into the hospitality sector.

Ace anchor and Executive Producer of Aaj Tak, Ashutosh has put in his papers and is learnt to be heading towards Global Broadcast News-controlled Channel 7, which is to be renamed IBN-7. Q W Naqvi, News Director, Aaj Tak confirmed the news, saying, “Ashutosh has indeed put in his papers with Aaj Tak”.
Doordarshan and NDTV are among the winners of the prestigious Commonwealth Broadcasting Association Awards 2006. The other awardees this year include Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and Australian Broadcasting Corporation. The awards were announced on Thursday as part of the ongoing 26th CBA General Conference in Delhi.
Prasar Bharati will co-host the 26th general conference of the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association in New Delhi from February 15. The theme of the four-day conference is ‘Making a difference in the multi-platform world’. The conference is expected to attract more than 250 delegates from over 100 Commonwealth nations.
