'This is a landmark moment for sports media rights,' said FIFA President Gianni Infantino
Streaming giant Netflix has bagged exclusive United States broadcast rights for the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the years 2027 and 2031, according to news reports.
Reports say that it is the most significant deal FIFA has signed with a streaming giant for a major tournament. The exact value of the deal has not been disclosed.
"This is a landmark moment for sports media rights. As a marquee brand and FIFA's new long-term partner, Netflix has shown a very strong level of commitment to growing women's football,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino, according to reports.
He added that the agreement sends out a strong message about the real value of FIFA Women’s World Cup and global women’s games in general.
World Cups are usually broadcast on free-to-air public networks to reach large audiences.
“The FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 is already taking shape and we can’t wait for the opening match on Thursday, 24 June 2027 – and all matches that lead to the final on Sunday, 25 July 2027,” said the FIFA President. “This historic tournament will have a massive impact not only in South America, but around the whole world, taking the women’s game to the next level in terms of participation and popularity.”
