From Standards and Labeling by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency to the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan, the government is making efforts towards energy conservation. Interestingly, brands are in line with the government’s plans to promote sustainability and are contributing to creating a better future for the coming generations.
As World Energy Conservation Day is observed on 14th December each year, we take a look at what Indian brands are doing to support the government's sustainability initiatives to promote energy conservation.
Currently, Samsung only sells the premium inverter split AC in which the compressor runs continuously leading to better ambient temperature and lower energy costs
Kishan Jain, Director at Goldmedal Electricals sees energy conservation as one of the biggest challenges of the day.
"As we observe World Energy Conservation Day, Jain feels, climate change and environmental sustainability are one of the most pressing global challenges today. It is imperative that we actively choose energy-efficient technologies and solutions that not only consume less energy but also have a net-zero impact on the environment," added Jain.
Talking about the government's initiatives on energy conservation, he said, in their effort to safeguard the environment, the government has also taken steps to promote sustainability through their initiative for energy-efficient lighting products across India.
He expressed his support for the government's initiatives. "We support such initiatives and believe that conservation of energy isn’t a far-fetched idea, owing to the conventional technologies." He also explained, "LEDs have proven to possess remarkable features including, environmental friendliness, cost-effectiveness, low power consumption, and durability, among many more".
In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, also launched a scheme for LED bulb distribution under the domestic efficient lighting programme in Delhi and a National Programme for LED-based Home and Street Lighting.
Bhavin Turakhia, CEO and Founder of communication and collaboration platform Flock shared, "Climate change is an alarming issue that we are facing today as an ecosystem. As an entrepreneur, I have always strived to build my businesses around the concept of reducing the carbon footprint of organisations," said Turakhia.
"The key objective behind Flock is to ensure that more work gets done virtually through less amount of paperwork. As individuals, we have to be wary of taking steps towards reducing the ill effects of global warming such as climate change and abnormal weather conditions as there are evident signs of crisis," he added.
Turakhia feels that initiatives at the micro-level are the most capable of bringing about change. He believes that opting for alternate forms of energy, carpooling and curbing energy use to be mindful of the next generation will prove to have a macro impact on our environment.
Anup Sharma, an independent political campaign strategist, and mentor at The Lentils Institute, also shared some insights about how such government policies are encouraging brands to move forward towards energy conservation.
Realising the importance of energy conservation, the Indian government launched the Environmental Conservation Act in 2001 and strengthened policies to focus specifically on energy efficiency by setting up the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and then initiating the National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE) in 2008, said Sharma.
Sharma explained that even now the government is taking various new initiatives; from building smart cities to capacity building of DISCOMs for carrying out load management, energy conservation programme, to focus on EVs, phasing out of older vehicles and other measures to improve existing technologies. Talking about brands' initiatives, Sharma said, as the world is moving towards ‘smart’ energy management, business communities and corporates are now viewing energy conservation differently and are now speaking the same language. Organisations have started investing in technologies that involve ‘intelligent’ use of electricity in a generation, deployment as well as consumption, he concluded.
