Joel Kaplan to replace Nick Clegg as Meta global policy head

Tech giant Meta has appointed Joel Kaplan to head its global policy team, replacing Nick Clegg who is now stepping down. Kaplan, who served under the George W Bush as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy, was serving as Meta’s Vice President of Global Public Policy.
Kaplan who is a Republican and free-speech champion for conservative voices has taken over from Clegg who is a Liberal Democrat leader and the former PM of UK between 2010 to 2015.
Notably, this shift comes three weeks before Republican president-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. The election of the Republican leader signals a shift in political sentiments of US companies who have been distancing themselves from progressive stances.
“I’m grateful for everything you’ve done for Meta and the world these past seven years. I’ve learned so much working with you and our whole team is better for having this opportunity.
“You’ve made an important impact advancing Meta’s voice and values around the world, as well as our vision for AI and the metaverse. You’ve also built a strong team to carry this work forward. I’m excited for Joel to step into this role next given his deep experience and insight leading our policy work for many years,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressed Clegg in a statement.
