Tamil news genre grew by 156% on account of M Karunanidhi’s demise coverage: BARC India

Tamil News genre saw a spike from 209 million Impressions to 535 million Impressions in week 32 as compared to the previous three weeks

The Tamil News space grew by 156 per cent on account of coverage of M Karunanidhi’s demise on August 7, according to Broadcast Audience Research Council, India.

According to an analysis by BARC India, week 32 (4-10 August) vs previous three weeks (14 July-3 August) shows that Tamil News genre saw a spike from 209 million Impressions to 535 million Impressions (TG: TN/Pondicherry,2+) as the demise was covered heavily by Tamil News Channels in that week.

According to BARC, the highest growth in viewership was seen on August 7 and 8 when Tamil News Channels extensively covered the news of Karunanidhi's death followed by the last rites.

On August 7 and 8,  Tamil News channels saw a viewership spike from 53.5 million Impressions to 366 million Impressions. A growth of 585 per cent was registered.

Even the time spent per viewer on Tamil News channels on these two days grew by 298 per cent. On average, viewers in the state spent close to two hours on Tamil News channels.

In Chennai, viewers spent two hours 43 minutes watching the news, as against 32 minutes registered for the previous three weeks (Tuesdays and Wednesdays), thus registering a growth of 399 per cent.
