Timex Group India Ltd (TGIL) has appointed Gopalratnam Kannan as President. He will be reporting to Kapil Kapoor, MD, TGIL. Kannan brings with him more than 18 years' experience in the watch industry, wherein he has worked for Swatch Group India and Titan Industries Ltd. Prior to joining Timex as Country Manager - India for the Swatch Group, Kannan was responsible for all India operations for brands like Omega, Longines, Rado, Blancpain, Tissot and Swatch. As President of Timex Group, Kannan will be heading the sales and marketing operations and all support functions, including finance and HR.

Wadhawan Food Retail Pvt Ltd (WFRL) has announced the appointment of Rajan Bhalla as Chief Marketing Officer and Pradeep Chechani as Vice- President for Supply Chain. Both would be reporting to Ashok Bhasin, Managing Director, Wadhawan Food Retail. In his new role, Bhalla will be responsible for marketing for all brands and formats under the WFRL umbrella, including Spinach, Sabka Bazaar and Smart. Bharti Airtel has appointed Sunil Tandon as Chief Operating Officer of its mobile services in the Maharashtra and Goa circle from October 2008. Prior to this, Tandon was Head - Devices and International Roaming at Bharti Airtel in Delhi. He has been associated with the telecom service provider since August 2003 and has had a multi-faceted exposure in mobile services marketing.

I&B Ministry launches its first-ever community radio

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has launched its first-ever community radio in collaboration with Society for Development Alternatives, an NGO, on October 23 at Taragram, Orchha in Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh. Thirty-four NGOs have so far got MIB’s permission to set up and operate community radio stations in India.

I believe differentiation exists and the listener is able to understand and recognise which station he is listening to. Very soon, you will find radio players differentiating and going into profitable niches and it would be an ongoing process. The top three players will make 77 per cent of the money, while the other players would be forced to find other niches where they can be profitable. But these are still early days.
