The imposition of the equalisation levy on foreign online ad platforms by the Indian government may affect trade done overseas, say media reports.
The US has sent out a warning saying that the levy will create trouble for Indian firms doing business in other nations and has asked the Indian government to take a relook at the levy or what is being known as the ‘Google tax’.
What was initially imposed on companies like Google, Facebook and Netflix has now been extended to all in the overseas ecomm sector.
The US has also come up with a report listing issues with respect to digital trade in India, in terms of data localisation, intellectual property transfer and propriety source code.
