The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League begins today with a clash between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the former’s home ground in Chennai. Official broadcaster Star Sports has roped in 15 sponsors for the tournament so far.

The brands that Disney Star has onboarded for this season of IPL are Dream11, Asian Paints, Vimal, Thums up Charged, Havells, Joy Cosmetics, Dettol, Harpic, Vanessa, Amul, Groww, Rupay Credit, HDFC PayZapp, Parle and Mondelez. As per sources, the broadcaster is in the process of signing a few more sponsors before the game begins.

As earlier reported by exchange4media, Disney Star was seeking Rs 71 crore for co-presenting sponsorship and Rs 35 crore for associate sponsorship for HD channels. For SD channels, Disney Star had sought outlays of Rs 167 crore and Rs 83 crore for co-presenting and associate sponsorships, respectively.

Last year, JioCinema, the streaming partner of IPL, and Disney Star engaged in an intense race to outdo one another for viewers’ attention and advertisers’ money. However, it is believed both recorded a decline in revenue due to the tough competition and slow market. According to market estimates, while Disney Star clocked between Rs 2,000 and Rs 2,500 crore, Viacom18 earned about Rs 1,800 crore.

However, this year, the dynamics seems to have changed, thanks to the merger of Disney Star and Viacom 18 announced by Reliance Industries and The Walt Disney Company.
