The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has advised the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) to discontinue the adoption of landing channels for the purposes of television audience measurement, according to media reports.

The reports stated that in a letter written to the BARC, the ministry has termed the use of landing channels as violation of the provisions of extant interconnection regulations of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). It directed the body to stop generating ratings of channels that do not adhere to TRAI regulations.

The order follows a statement issued by the TRAI on the matter on Tuesday.

In the statement, the TRAI had said that some TV channels allegedly, in collusion with the distributors, placed some channels on multiple logical channel numbers (LCNs).  This influences television ratings.
