Faster, Higher, Stronger...and Richer : London wins Olympics 2012
London wins the bid for the 2012 Olympic Games, bolstered by the show of strength with the presence of David and Victoria Beckham, Lord Sebastian Coe and PM Tony Blair. This will be the most expensive Olympics, made possible by sponsors including Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Kodak, Visa, Omega, Panasonic and Samsung. What do sponsors get out of such an involvement? Is it worth it?
London wins the bid for the Olympics 2012. Finally! In spite of French President Jacques Chirac’s not so well meaning comments about the Mad Cow disease being Britain’s only contribution to European agriculture; and about British food being so bad that it was in close competition with Finland. Well, the great Lord Sebastian Coe lead the bid — flanked by the Beckhams, Boris Becker, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and the backing of the world’s most recognised figure, Nelson Mandela. Yes, the agony that followed the ecstasy (read: London bomb blasts) will not deter “British Olympics from inspiring a generation of kids to become sporting champions”...
Mandela, the most respected and recognized person in the world was publicly supportive of the Olympics 2012 being held in London, their victory should hardly come as a shock. London first had the Olympics come to town in 1908, and it was the host city for the Games again in war-torn 1948. The 2012 London Olympics will make London the only city ever to host the Games thrice.
The commitments of London’s bid contained in the charters will eliminate the entire traditional financial burden involved in sending and caring for athletes at the Olympic Games, so that athletes and teams can concentrate on their performance. All 10,000 athletes plus team officials will be given free return flights to London, 100 (£52) of free phone calls from the Olympic Village, free UK train travel and athletes’ families will be given the opportunity to stay with British host families free of charge.
