Aligarh intellectuals press for communal harmony

The Millat Bedari Muhim Committee (MBMC) Aligarh recently called a meeting to review the situation in Assam as well as in Uttar Pradesh

The violence taking place in Assam as the whole country worried. Violence in the lower Assam regions have left 55 people dead so far and lakhs homeless.

The Millat Bedari Muhim Committee (MBMC) Aligarh recently called a meeting to review the situation in Assam as well as in Uttar Pradesh. Prof Razaullah Khan of MBMC expressed the fear that if the Government remained a mute spectator, the fire might spread to many parts of the country.

Speaking at the meeting, Editor of the Aligarh Movement Magazine, Jasim Mohammad, pointed out, “The Assam Accord has accepted the real status of those who are being killed today. It is very unfortunate that all the five people killed by police bullets are Muslims and this is not by chance but choice.”

Meanwhile, citing the case of Uttar Pradesh, Jasim Mohammad said that in the first 100 days rule of Akhilesh Yadav, three places – Kosikalan (Mathura), Pratapgarh and Bareilly – had faced communal violence and blamed the violence on the police and administration mindset.

AMU Court Member Professor Humayun Murad alleged that since the Samajwadi Party Government came to power in Uttar Pradesh, the communal atmosphere and law and order have been deteriorating.

Coordinator of the Media Centre, Nikhat Parveen, said that Hindus and Muslims are citizens of India and must work together. Prof Syed Iqbal Ali expressed the anguish that the government has failed in translating constitutional secularism in administrative ethos. AMU Executive Member Dr Mohammad Shahid demanded intervention of the Central Government as social tension has grips Assam and UP. He pointed out that in the time of globalisation, such violent incidents will detract investors and the progress of nation will come to a standstill.

On the other hand, freelance social and political analyst N Jamal Ansari pointed out that blaming only the government or others will not do any good. “Muslims should introspect and think why their intellectual and sensitivity barometer has come to such a low that they celebrated Eid even after Gujarat genocide”, he said.

In a resolution, the Millat Bedari Muhim Committee called on Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to launch cases against communal elements and par with terrorism. In another resolution, UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav was asked to identify communal elements among the police and administration to improve communal harmony in state.

Apart from a large number of intellectuals, Dr Fatima Zehra, Dr GF Sabri, Deeba Abrar, and Dr Mujeeb Shehzar were also present at the meeting.
