The session on ‘The next decade of social media’, by Peter Kim, Chief Digital Officer, Cheil Worldwide on the first day of the Cannes Lions festival was both animated and interesting. Kim predicted trends on social media for the next ten years. Revenues from social media the way agencies in their current format get, will disappear he predicted, also saying these trends will render traditional agencies ineffective.
He predicted:
1. Social media will be gone in the manner in which you know it today
2. Will be shoppable
3. Will be snackable- consumers today have no time, information has to be given like snacks e.g. a 7-second video with a hash tag
4. Automated – fast moving from organic to automated (programmatic)
5. Connective
6. Filtered – consumers hear only what they want to
7. Integrated
8. Chinese – As it is one of the largest economies contributing to global GDPs
9. Subcutaneous- under your skin
10. Empowering – brands like Dove and Nike are already using social media to empower
