ESPN-STAR Sports (ESS) has announced its acquisition of the global commercial rights for the Champions League T20 for a period of 10 years. ESS will be using all forms of mediums for the promotion of the League, of which radio and television would be used the most.

The stunning victory of Team India in the T20 World Cup 2007 at a stage when India had undergone a dismal performance at the 50-50 World Cup, and post the success of the Indian Premier League (IPL), cricket is hot property again. In a generation where instant gratification is the need of the hour T20 cricket has created a space for itself among both advertisers and the cricket lovers.

With the Champions League commencing from December 3 to 10, 2008, T20 cricket has gone a step further in revolutionising the game with an aim to create more excitement.

In an unusual move, Champions League is also being advertised on Neo Sports. On whether this heralds an emerging trend where a channel allows its property to be advertised on its rival channel, Nirmal Dayani, Senior Director – Marketing, ESPN-STAR Sports, said, “It is all about making the best use of every opportunity. We are also in partnership with Café Coffee Day and we will also be looking forward to a tie-up with some radio brands. The challenge is not only to set up a differentiation, but also to demonstrate a change in the game itself to our consumers.”

The Champions League T20 consists of eight teams, which include two teams from India – Chennai and Jaipur, two from Australia, two from South Africa, one from England and one from Pakistan.
