India-China face-off: IPL Governing Council to review sponsorship deals
The Council will hold a meeting next week to review the same
The Board of Control of Cricket India (BCCI) has decided to review IPL sponsorship deals with Chinese companies due to the ongoing confrontation on the border between India and China.
BCCI has decided to hold a meeting next week to review the sponsorship deals. The Indian Premier League tweeted on Friday late evening from their official handle: "Taking note of the border skirmish that resulted in the martyrdom of our brave jawans, the IPL Governing Council has convened a meeting next week to review IPL’s various sponsorship deals."
Vivo bagged the IPL title sponsorship rights for five years in 2017. With the deal being valued at Rs 2,199 crore, Vivo was reported to be spending Rs 440 crore on the league every year.
IPL also has deals with Paytm and Dream11 as official sponsors and the brands have been extensively advertising on the tournament year on year. Though these are Indian companies, both have one Chinese company each as an investor.
While Alibaba Group has around 37% stake in Paytm, Tencent Holdings, Chinese multinational conglomerate, is an investor in Dream11.
