December brought the year to a sparkly end with Christmas and New Year celebrations. The festivities also meant festive ads for the season. In the fortnight between December 16 and 31, brands spread Christmas cheer with some well-thought-out commercials that warmed our hearts. Here are five ads from five brands that truly set themselves apart from the rest. They have been listed according to alphabetical order.

Everest

Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan tapped into the Bollywood nostalgia of an entire generation by referencing two of their iconic movies -- Baazigar and Don for Everest Pav Bhaji Masala. The film was directed by R. Balki. By bringing two of the most iconic stars of Bollywood, the brand capitalised on the equation shared by the two. The ad leverages humour to highlight their spicy banter.

redBus

That Christmas is for everyone is the underlying sentiment of the redBus Xmas ad. As part of #EveryonesChristmas: Homecoming is a part of redBus's annual initiative. It shows a grandfather showing his dejected granddaughter how Christmas brings India's various communities together.

Swiggy

Swiggy's Christmas ad was a hilarious Office-esque take. Santa Claus presents a primer on "The art of delivery joy" in front of the wide-eyed Swiggy employees who perplex and amuse the former in equal measures. The ad also has a cheeky reference to Swiggy's top competitor Zomato, which brought us a few chuckles.

Whistle

Wieden+Kennedy India put a smile on our faces with a clever ad for Whistle, a cosmetic dentistry brand. The idea was based on an insight that people who are not confident about their teeth don't like participating in conversations. The protagonist is a young man who navigates everyday situations trying to avoid talking at all costs, lest anyone sees his teeth. An interesting titbit about the ad is that the background theme was created with a small little instrument called “Morchang”, which, ironically, is played with teeth.

Zomato

Zomato's Christmas ad brought out the fuzzies in the festive season. The ad is an ode to the company's delivery executives who are determined to not let a tardy Santa Claus bring down the Christmas cheer.
