Actor Shah Rukh Khan, along with KKR partners and the Mehta Group, became Mumbai franchise owners for the all new motorsport racing league i1 Super Series, an initiative by Machdar Motorsports. Khan’s involvement with the i1 Super Series is definitely a big boost for the championship that will commence early January 2012.
Publicis Ambience Bangalore has recently won the creative duties of Mantri Square Mall in a multi-agency pitch involving around 7-8 agencies. The incumbent agency is Ogilvy & Mather, which had earlier handled the real estate as well as the mall businesses for Mantri. O&M has retained the real estate business.
As per the IRS 2011 Q2 results, general interest magazines have witnessed a decline in readership. While they have registered a 4 per cent de-growth over last year, the drop in average issue readership (AIR) as compared to the IRS 2009 Round 1 figures is around 15 per cent. The only magazine to see a rise in AIR over the two-year period is Mathrubhumi Thozhil Vartha.
RIM has doubled its marketing spends in India for its smartphone brand BlackBerry. The handset maker has also seen a spate of launches in 2011. After a four-ad campaign titled ‘Are you missing something without BBM’ created by Orchard Advertising, their new creative agency BBDO India has come out with a new campaign – ‘Welcome to the BlackBerry family’.
The Sun Group has launched a new Malayalam channel exclusively for children – Kochu TV. The channel will have a mix of entertainment and informative programmes such as animations, adaptations of popular Hollywood movies, and educational programmes. This is the third Malayalam channel and the fourth kids’ channel from the Group.
With Kannada dailies securing the top five positions, a healthy growth pattern can be seen among the top 20 players in the state with the exception of three players. Vijay Karnataka has held on to the top spot in the state list, displaying the same trend as in Bangalore, with an increase in its AIR of 5 per cent this year.
As per the IRS 2011 Q2 results, it has turned out to be a better year for most English and language dailies in Bangalore. While most dailies have registered an increase in AIR over last year, the quarter-on-quarter percentages don’t look too promising. Barring a few, magazines too have fared better over last year.
Komli Media and cross-platform interactive video advertising firm Jivox have tied up to tap into the $3 billion video advertising market in the APAC region. The main focus regions for this alliance are South-East Asia, India, and Australia. While Jivox is well-established in India, Komli Media has a strong presence in the APAC region.
Bangalore-based independent digital solutions provider 22feet has won the digital duties of Dutch beer brand Heineken. Vineet Gupta, Managing Partner, 22feet, has confirmed the win. Weiden + Kennedy is handling the creative duties of Heineken, while the media mandate is parked with Mindshare, Bangalore.
India Today Group’s Ashish Bagga has been elected as the President of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS) at its 72nd Annual General Meeting (AGM), held in Bangalore on September 30, 2011. He takes over the reins from outgoing President Kundan R Vyas of Vyapar-Janmabhoomi Group. KN Tilak Kumar (Prajavani) is the Deputy President, while Ravindra Kumar (The Statesman) has been elected as the Vice President.
Chennai-based men’s apparel manufacturer Hasbro Clothing is in expansion mode. The clothing company plans to have 25 more stores by March 2012 and is targeting growth of 30 per cent this year. Hasbro is also eyeing new markets and is planning to increase the number of lifestyle accessories on offer.
Citizen Watches is bullish on strengthening its presence in India. The Japanese watch brand has increased its advertising budget by 40 per cent this year, which is expected to go up by 20-40 per cent in the next fiscal. Citizen has also fortified its bouquet in the country with two new collections and is unveiling its festive season campaign from today.

The group now plans to launch a Delhi edition of the paper. Also on the anvil are an English news channel in Delhi and a Kannada news channel in Bangalore.
